State Of the Union Address
I am always amazed at the talents, accomplishments and history of people that come through the doors of Premier Eye Physician's. Starting from the youngest, three day old Nicole, to my ninety-six year old Ms. Johnson who by the way recently underwent successful cataract surgery. Everyone is special and has a story to behold. All my patients are very special to me and I have been blessed to meet each and every one. People like Dr. C.T. Vivian, one of the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights movement made much of it possible for me to be able to practice medicine in this wonderful country and be a productive citizen. Due to his and others perseverance in the belief that all men were created equal. On July 31st, many of us from Atlanta to Los Angeles had the opportunity to attend the 85th birthday celebration of a legend, Dr. C.T. Vivian. Much of this newsletter will be dedicated to him and Mrs. Vivian. I am always amazed at the lives and contributions that many of my senior patients have made. People like Dr. CT vivan made contributions and we must continue to forge along that similar pathway. Our goal is to Run with the Torch of life and strive to make this Planet spirtually, economically, mentally and physically acceptable for every race, creed and color of mankind.

Happy Birthday to YOU!!
Eddie W. Harris, MD

ASK OUR EYE GUY

Why do you need a prescription and an eye exam to wear colored cosmetic Contacts?
Colored contacts are considered as a medical device by the FDA and require a medical exam by an eye care professional, even if you have perfect vision.

DOCS EYE EDUCATION

KERATOCONUS is a progressive eye disease which appears in persons usually in their early teens or twenties. This disease affects the cornea which begins to thin thus bulging into a cone like shape. It is difficult to detect and usually develops gradually. As the cornea’s shape becomes more irregular, it causes progressive nearsightedness and irregular astigmatism to develop causing blurring and distorted vision.

What causes KERATONOCONUS? Current research suggests a weakening of the corneal tissue due to an imbalance of enzymes within the Cornea. What are the RISK FACTORS involved? More than likely a genetic predisposition, overexposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, excessive eye rubbing and a history of poorly fit contact lenses, can account for the condition. It usually affects more than one member in the family.

There are a variety of TREATMENTS although as the shape of the cornea gets increasingly more irregular, glasses and soft lenses may not provide adequate vision correction.

  1. Gas-Permeable lenses (RGP) The rigid material will fit over the cornea somewhat replacing the cornea’s shape. Expect to visit your ophthalmologist frequently as the shape of your cornea changes.
  2. Piggybacking contact lenses- Using a soft hydro gel lens under a GP lens
  3. Hybrid Lens- A new design that has an oxygen permeable center that is rigid and a soft peripheral outer covering.
  4. Intac’s- Developed and FDA approved since 2004 are tiny plastic inserts that are placed under the eye’s surface of the periphery of the cornea to help reshape the cornea for clearer vision.
  5. Boston Scleral Lens Prosthetic Device(BSLPD)- Approved in1994, this device resembles a large contact and works by maintaining a pool of fluid on the eye’s surface. Light rays pass through and are bent to achieve proper focus.
  6. C3-R (Corneal Collagen cross-linking with riboflavin) - Eye drops that are activated by ultraviolet light to strengthen links between the connective tissue fibers within the cornea.
  7. Corneal Transplant also called a penetrating keratoplasty.

So remember, early detection is key and there are a variety of options available to you.

EYE WITNESS BUSINESS

If you wrestle with wanting to improve your leadership skills, learn more about fundraising strategies, develop problem solving methods and techniques, coalition building, learn program design and development perhaps you should become a student at the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute in Atlanta.

Under the auspices of Dr. C.T. Vivian, the author, the activist and the ultimate achiever, you could enhance a career or change your life. Reverend Vivian participated in his first sit-in demonstration in 1947 to integrate Barton’s Cafeteria in Peoria, Illinois. A follower of the Mahatma Ghandi’s non-violent, direct action strategy, he continued to lead demonstrations to abolish racial discrimination in Nashville, Selma and Alabama. In 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King appointed him National Director of Affiliates. Do you recall the infamous Upward Bound program that got so many of us through college? You can thank C.T. Vivian for implementing this program. Even as late as Hurricane Katrina, C.T. Vivian launched the “Churches supporting Churches” movement to assist those churches in the affected areas. Dr. Vivian is such a warm endearing individual who at 85 is still going strong, changing the world, one MOVEMENT at a time. If you followed his life and legacy, who would be more qualified than Dr. Vivian to implement a successful curriculum than the unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement himself.

If it is your desire to make a difference and change the global hardships that deface our nation by obtaining adequate knowledge and engage like minds wanting to make a difference, try entering the C.T.
